Lochbuie Mausoleum

Lochbuie, Isle of Mull

The mausoleum - gaelic An Caibael - The Chapel - is situated 200m north west of Lochbuie House

It is rectangular in shape having internal dimensions of 5.6m N-S and 4.3m W-E with walls 0.6m thick. The construction is of random stone with Carsaig sandstone dressings.

The entrance door is in the South gable wall which carries a stone panel in which is inscribed the arms of the MacLeans of Lochbuie and the Clan motto 'Vincere vel mori' - Conquer or die.

The inscription below reads:

'This monument is erected by John MacLaine of Lochbuy, his lady and six children, where their remains are to be deposited. Anno domini 1777'

John MacLaine was the builder of the old house at Lochbuie which was inhabited after the vacation of MoyCastle. He died in 1778
